The Servitude of Debt (Proverbs 22:7)

One large problem in our churches is covetousness. It is said that covetousness (or a greedy desire to have more) is one of the sins that is often overlooked and unpunishable in our Bible-believing churches. One natural result of this sin is the pitfall of debt.

The average citizen in the United States is over fifteen thousand dollars in credit card debt! The average household with any debt owes over one hundred thirty thousand dollars! Our nation, as a whole is trillions of dollars in debt to the nations of the world, and encourages its citizens to take out loans for college, housing, and vehicles. Sadly, many believers fail to realize what debt does to their Christian walks.

Proverbs states that the borrower is servant to the lender. This means that, until the lender gets their money back, they have control over many aspects of your life. How many believers tithe and give to Missions, when they owe the bank thousands of dollars? How many work several jobs: neglecting their family & Christian walk, to get out of debt? How many ruin their testimonies, by going to collections & even losing their houses, because they bit off more than they could chew financially?

We need to learn to be a grateful people that are content with what God gives us to meet our needs. Scripture is explicit that gratitude & contentedness define the True Christian (I Tim 6:3-10). Are you a person that is in debt? Save your testimony, keep tithing, and do your best to get out! Until then, the lenders have control over you, whether you know it or not.
